WAR WATCH WEDNESDAYS
#252, OCTOBER 22, 2025. Compiled by Dick Bennett.
The Fall 2025 number
of Nukewatch Quarterly includes five important
articles on US nuclear war preparation, four of them important essays by staff
member John LaForge, who writes Nobel Peace Prize quality research on
nuclear weapons .
1. A highlighted Editorial: “U.S. Pariah
State Joins Israel in Outlaw Bombing of Iran.”
The bombing by planes and a submarine were ”acts of war and criminal
conspiracies of the highest order.”
2. A second article makes the case that
“U.S. Atomic Bombings Didn’t Save Lives or End the War.” LaForge cites Adm.Leahy, Major Gen. LeMay,
Gen. Arnold, Gen.MacArthur, and the
Federal Council of Churches, and urges readers to protest lies that
protect nuclear weapons.
3. The “Golden Dome” missile defense program is “A
Gold Mine of Profiteering” (costly and corrupt).
4. Particularly urgent: “U.S. Nuclear Weapons Returned to UK Airbase.” The delivery of the new US B61-12 hydrogen (thermonuclear) first-strike, accurate,
gravity (air-dropped) bombs, “needlessly destabilizes the shooting war between
Russia and Ukraine,” and “is an open violation of the 1970 Treaty on the Nonproliferation
of Nuclear Weapons” (NPT).
5. The fifth article, by John Burroughs,
“Environmental Review Begins for Massive Project to Produce New Nuclear Weapon
Cores” (“at least 80 plutonium pits for the W87-1nuclear warhead per year”). The article is based upon a “comprehensive report”
by the Union of Concerned Scientists” (UCS), which warns against an
enlarged nuclear arms race; it article appeared in Currents, the
newsletter of Abolishing Nuclear Weapons for Peace and Justice. Burroughs is the Senior Analyst of the Lawyers
Committee on Nuclear Policy.
These five articles provide a scholarly,
factual foundation for our resistance to nuclear weapons proliferation. We can
inform ourselves, and we can take
action. Subscribe to Nukewatch Q.

NUCLEAR WAR
Scott Ritter. “The Missiles of
October.” Consortium News
(10-8-25).
“Nuclear arms control teeters on the brink of extinction and
with it all of humanity.” Read here... By Scott Ritter. Real Scott Ritter .The last remaining nuclear
arms control treaty between the United States and Russia — New START — is set to expire on Feb. 5,
2026.
This treaty, which caps the nuclear arsenals of both
nations at 1,550 deployed strategic nuclear weapons each, was signed back in
2010, during the administrations of U.S. President Barack Obama and Russian
President Dmitri Medvedev. At that time, the two nations were engaged in what
proved to be an abortive “reset” of relations.
But the underlying problems which prompted the need for a
reset — NATO expansion, continued U.S. pursuit of hegemony disguised as a
“rules based international order” and a general U.S. disregard for arms control
as a necessary mechanism of global stability — were never fully addressed, and
new problems emerged (such as the reemergence of Vladimir Putin as the
president of Russian, Russian intervention in Syria and the conflict in
Ukraine) which made a reset impossible.
Instead, relations between the two nuclear-armed world
powers worsened, and today the U.S. finds itself in a proxy war with Russia in
Ukraine that threatens to go nuclear at any moment should either side make a
mistake or miscalculation. Both nations find themselves on the cusp of a new
nuclear arms race, and the only thing that holds them back is a treaty set to
expire and no new treaty on the horizon. . . .
[Ritter’s careful sifting of the situation follows. D]
The consequences of doing nothing are dire — the U.S. and
Russia are engaged in a proxy war in Ukraine that threatens to invoke the
nuclear doctrines of both nations. If New START expires, a new unconstrained
nuclear arms race will assuredly occur, one which will see both nations engaged
in destabilizing actions which could be viewed as existentially threatening.
One mistake, one miscalculation, and the world could very
well find itself confronting the horrific reality of a nuclear Armageddon.
Let’s give peace a chance.
Scott Ritter is a former U.S. Marine Corps
intelligence officer who served in the former Soviet Union implementing arms
control treaties, in the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Storm and in Iraq
overseeing the disarmament of WMD. His most recent book is Disarmament in the Time of Perestroika, published by Clarity Press. This article is from the author’s Substack.
North Korea is responding to the end of NEW START and the huge expansion of US
nuclear weapons by expanding too.
