GLOBAL WARMING AND NUCLEAR WEAPONS
Art Hobson. “Ending the nuclear weapons threat: USA and others must support
U.N. treaty. NWADG 22 August 2023.”
. . . The bad news is that, along with global warming, The Bomb is an existential threat to
civilization. The good news is that the
chances of real action on both issues are now at an all-time high.
For global
warming, this is because the evidence is now obvious daily, making it absurd
for the fossil fuel industry to continue its decades-long propaganda campaign
supporting oil production.
For nuclear weapons, this is because of the
United Nations' "Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons." It prohibits the nations that have signed the
Treaty from testing, producing, acquiring, possessing, stockpiling, using,
deploying, or threatening to use nuclear weapons. It also prohibits providing nuclear weapons
assistance to other nations. MORE PressReader.com - Digital Newspaper & Magazine Subscriptions

Andrea Brower is an activist and scholar from Kaua‘i. She
is an assistant professor at Gonzaga University's Department of Sociology. Her
research, writing, and teaching are embedded in social movements for justice,
equality, liberation, and ecological regeneration.
In a recent article, Prof. Brower traces the roots of the
disaster in Maui to “empire, capitalism, elite power, and their ravaging of the
planet and people” and, equally importantly, highlights the transformational
cooperative alternative future embodied in the grassroots mutual-aid response —
also rooted in long historical tradition — that has abounded in the Maui
wildfire’s aftermath.

LEARNING FROM OTHERS
TO DEFEAT BIG POWER |
Jim Hightower. “People and the Planet Win Big
Victory Over Big Oil!” Hightower’s Lowdown. August 25, 2023. We had a classic example of a
widely-ignored, momentous, political/cultural story this week. It involved a
nation whose voters stood up to Big Oil and said: “No.” No to the petro monopolists’ billions, their
raw political power, their unsurpassed greed, and their authoritarian
arrogance. And if these people dared to go further, saying “no” to drilling
in an oil-rich region of their land—telling the profiteers to go away and
just leave the oil in the ground so it won’t add to climate destruction. That’s exactly what 58 percent of
voters in Ecuador said last Sunday in a truly historic, binding referendum. In a next week’s Lowdown Substack, I’ll
send a full report to you on this amazing victory for the people and the
planet. But it’s so newsworthy and encouraging that I wanted to tip you off
to it now. Jim Hightower's Lowdown is a
