OPPENHEIMER FILM       

Dear Friends, [I spliced together two letters from Art with a few changes.  –D]

 As you know, the film “Oppenheimer” opens this weekend in Fayetteville and elsewhere.  It will be at both local theaters, Razorback and Fiesta Square.  It is three hours long.  By now, I feel certain it will be well worth the time.  It’s based on a new biographical book that you might want to read.  I am attaching the recent special edition of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists with articles covering all aspects of the film.  I hope you can open it—I emailed it to myself and it worked.  Since World War Two, BAS has been the top journal related to nuclear weapons and international arms control.  This film is going to make a difference.

The new film Oppenheimer will raise awareness about nuclear war

It’s a major Hollywood production, but I think it contains little of the traditional hype or nonsense.  It seems to be a serious effort to portray the problem of nuclear weapons within the context of the leading nuclear bomb scientist, J. Robert Oppenheimer.  It’s three hours long.  The director also directed Interstellar (a scientifically well-informed film about a trip to a black hole) and Dunkirk (history of the historic British retreat from Europe in 1940).  Kenneth Branagh, Matt Damon, and other “big stars” are in it.  Audiences who viewed the film in advance say it has a transformative effect.

(from Dick)  Wikipedia.  Oppenheimer (film) is an upcoming biographical thriller film directed, written and co-produced by Christopher Nolan about J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist who helped develop the first nuclear weapons. Based on the 2005 biography American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, the film stars Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer, with a supporting ensemble cast including Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., and Florence Pugh.  Filming began in late February 2022 and wrapped that May, with cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema.

“Very Important Ukraine War Book.”       

I finally began reading a very important book (Operation Z) on Ukraine war by Jaques Baud. In my view, it’s the best book I know of on the subject, more so than Abelow & Medea Benjamin.  Baud is much more an expert on the subject with a depth of insider knowledge, and his academically structured book is overflowing with important references.

Baud is a former member of Swiss Strategic Intelligence, specialist in Eastern Europe, head of UN peace operations, was involved in high level Russian military & intel negotiations after fall of USSR, and was a NATO official involved in Ukraine after the 2014 coup, and author of multiple books.
