Help Awaken Arkansas’ Congressmen’s Climate Somnolence Instead of Serving Their Constituents

Recently, Dina Nash (chair of UUFF’s Justice Committee) was in Washington, DC for an afternoon of lobbying with others from Citizens’ Climate Lobby. . . . I got to meet with Rep. Crawford’s and Rep. Womack’s staff, as well as Sen. Boozman’s and him for about 40 minutes each. There are 3 proposed climate measures we talked with them about, but responses were interested, but non-committal. We assume they are still waiting for the groundswell of panic at which time they might do something: please be that groundswell! They are not leading; it’s business as usual, as you will see when you read my letter in the URL below. . . . https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Anx0mIIkn2tTXAJgxuxWxjOiaSnb0w911Jo028OoC3I/edit?usp=sharing    UUFF E-News

Climate Change: Drought.
Chelsea Whyte.  “Running Out of River.”  New Scientist (Spring 2023).
“The mighty Colorado River is a vital resource for millions of people, but overuse and climate change mean it is drying up.  Can we save the Nile of North America?”  The author argues for a restrictive regulatory compact among the states using the river.  “If the river is allowed to be used unchecked, it will be everywhere and nowhere.”  [A limited compact was signed recently, but the affected Native Nations were omitted.]

Laura Dhillon Kane.   Canada plans to adapt to changing climate.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette (June 29, 2023).   Canada has unveiled a strategy to adapt to more frequent and devastating events such as wildfires, floods, heat waves and droughts, warning that climate change will threaten more lives without a plan to create a more resilient society. . . .The federal government has previously announced $1.2 billion in funding to support the strategy. It released an initial draft last fall and conducted final consultations before issuing the finalized version on Tuesday. . . .   MORE  Arkansas Online (pressreader.com)   [How significant is $1.2 billion for dealing with all Canadian disasters caused by climate change?  At least it is a beginning for an urgently needed national plan.  --D]
