OMNI'S Ecology E-Newsletter

OMNI'S ECOLOGY E-NEWSLETTER
Arkansas is fortunate to have OMNI’s action ecology group, Climate Change Task Force, including its on-line newsletter dedicated to the dissemination of information about the consequences of climate warming. It is called 350 PPM and is edited by Dr. Robert McAfee

WHY 350PPM?

McAfee quotes Dr. James Hansen of NASA’s Goddard Space Institute: “If humanity wishes to preserve a planet similar to that on which civilization developed…CO2 must be reduced from its current 385 ppm to at most 350 ppm.” It is only at this level or below that the climate and environmental systems of the earth as we know them can be maintained. As points of reference: CO2 and warming are rapidly rising. In 1988 the earth's atmosphere reached 350 PPM of CO2. Global average temperatures for January through June 2010 are the hottest on record. CO2 levels in our atmosphere are higher than any time in the last 2 million years.
