Sunshine Week 2011, March 13-19, Freedom of Information, Transparency

"It's time for more transparency" League of Women VotersElisabeth MacNamara, President, LWV Sunshine Week 2011   to jbennet
Dear Dick ,
Do you think government should be held accountable for its actions? Do you think information should be available to citizens?
If you answered yes to these questions, we invite you to join us for Sunshine Week.
An open and accountable government is the cornerstone of a healthy democracy — and the League of Women Voters is committed to maintaining this. Our efforts have helped citizens gain access to information as we work to put the power back in the hands of the public.
We know that an open and accessible government is vital to establishing and maintaining the people’s trust and confidence in their leadership, and in the government’s ability to effectively serve its citizens.
If you support greater transparency, we invite you to join us this week.
WHEN: Friday, March 18 from 12 – 1:30 PM (EST)
WHAT: The League will co-host the 6th Annual Sunshine Week National Dialogue, “The Road Forward on Open Government,” an event featuring a discussion on how President Obama’s openness initiatives are being put into practice -- from both a policy and a technical standpoint -- and what more we can and should expect the Administration to do to meet its goal.
WHO: Speakers include a panel of transparency experts from inside and outside government who will discuss federal openness policies and opportunities for people to use government information to make a difference in their communities.
WHERE: The event will be held at the Center for American Progress in Washington, D.C. and will be available via webcast. For more information or to register, visit http://www.openthegovernment.org/.
Join us to get involved with your government and call for more transparency! Please register today.
Sincerely,

FREEDOM OF INFORMATION
Elisabeth MacNamara
President, LWVUS
P.S. You have the ability to make your community stronger by pushing for more government transparency. We want to hear about your efforts. Visit our Facebook page and let us know how you are getting involved this Sunshine Week.
