WAR WATCH WEDNESDAYS, #123, APRIL 26, 2023
John Bellamy Foster.  The Pentagon, Abrupt Climate Change, and Ecological Emergency.
Abolishing Nuclear Weapons
Ground Zero
Nukewatch Quarterly
InThese Times

The Ecological Emergency, the Pentagon, and US National Security
John Bellamy Foster. The Ecological Revolution: Making Peace with the Planet.  MR, 2009.
Foster is one of the most brilliant of living scholars with over a dozen books while editing a major journal.  What he conveys in Chapter 5, “The Pentagon and Climate Change,” possesses critical importance still today.  Foster discusses global warming, then assesses abrupt climate change and its inherent social dangers, and finally he explains how the present economic system is a barrier to solution.  The fearsome possibility exists, as the IPCC had reported and some Pentagon scientists understood, for climate change of a barely imaginable scale and suddenness, resulting not from gradual change but from “disruption of the thermohaline circulation” of the Atlantic Ocean (110).  The Pentagon engaged Peter Schwartz and Doug Randall to prepare a study, which became the momentous Oct. 2003 report, An Abrupt Climate Change Scenario and Its Implications for United States National Security.   It called into question the conventional belief that cc would be gradual, and it seriously engaged with and dramatized the science of abrupt change.  It “elevated,” it gave authority to the threat throughout the government.   And the 2003 report recognizes the added danger of convergence of war and warming: “as the world’s carrying capacity declines under harsh climatic condition, warfare becomes widespread—producing increased dangers of thermonuclear war” (114).
     We must abolish the weapons.

ABOLISH NUCLEAR WEAPONS
Clear Voices from Print Magazines
Ground Zero (April 2023). Offers 7 significant articles; for example.
Leonard Eiger, “Celebrate Earth Day & Mother’s Day with Ground Zero,”
connects the dots.  “While climate change and the threat of nuclear war are the two major threats to the future of humankind and life on our planet, their solutions are similar”—international cooperation.   GZ keeps its eye on the prize by celebrating ED for world peace and Julia Ward Howe’s original intention of Mother’s Day for Peace (OMNI celebrated Howe’s Day for several years; will you take it on?  We must cooperate at every opportunity for peace, and not be distracted.)   Another: A review of Jeanne Clark’s memoir, All the Way In: A Story of Activism, Incarceration, and Organic Farming, which includes her protests against those horrific ballistic missile Trident submarines near Seattle.  (Ground Zero, like OMNI, is a permanent center for peace; become a member of both.)

Nukewatch Quarterly (Spring 2023).  Outstandingly valuable magazine, this number  contains 14 articles (plus a page of “Shorts”).  Examples: by Lindsay Potter, a brief, perfectly clear appraisal of the present condition of the 2010 New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START), concluding that nuclear arsenals still able to cause a human and environmental apocalypse “begs the usefulness of any treaty that does not require elimination of all nuclear weapons”; by Benjamin and Davies, “What Can the United States Bring to the Peace Table for Ukraine?” (support Ukrainian neutrality, lift sanctions against Russia, reduce troops in Europe, remove its missiles, and more; we know how to stop the war, and the US can do it).

Frida Berrigan.  “The End of the World Is Back: Why We Need a New Generation of Nuclear Abolitionists.”  In These Times (Jan.-Feb. 2023).  US Ohio class submarines are in the Arabian Sea and the Atlantic “within range of Russia.”  President Putin said Russia would use “all the means” at its disposal to “defend” itself against NATO’s encirclement.  The Russians and the US have over 4,000 nuclear warheads each.  A nuclear war could dump 150 million tons of soot into the atmosphere of “nuclear winter,” drastically curtailing food production.  We urgently need nuclear disarmament.  Our leaders have failed to accomplish it.  It’s up to the people.  Will you spend the next decade as part of the problem, or will you join the necessary mass movement?
Frida Berrigan, “Living with World's End in Plain Sight.”  Ground Zero.

https://www.gzcenter.org › frida-berrigan-living-with-w...  Frida lives in the shadow of General Dynamics Electric Boat, which built the first generation of Trident submarines, and is building the next generation.
“How to Survive Our Apocalyptic Future.”  The Nation.

https://www.thenation.com › Article   Nov 8, 2022 — Frida Berrigan, a TomDispatch regular, writes the Little Insurrections blog for WagingNonviolence.org, is the author of It Runs in the Family.

[These organizations and their magazines and social protests together could save our civilization, if a majority of our populace listened to and acted on their hope.  –Dick]

OMNI CLIMATE MEMO MONDAYS, #124

OMNI CLIMATE MEMO MONDAYS, #124, APRIL 24, 2023
Our Print Magazines Imagine the Future
Mother Jones: Electricity and Regional Transmission
Nukewatch Quarterly: Renewables and No Nuclear Weapons
 In These Times: Reparations

To Have a Future: Electrify and Regional Transmission Lines.  Mother Jones Magazine (May-June 2023) contains several articles on climate change, especially decarbonizing USA   “Electrify Everything” includes Bill McKibben’s “Yes in Our Backyards” and Lois Parshley’s “Powered Up.”   McKibben celebrates the building/solar panels boom.  Parshley urges regional transmission lines.

To Have a Future: 1.  Massive Production of Renewables, 2. Total Abolition of Nuclear Weapons
Nukewatch Quarterly (Spring 2023) in a debunking article on “nuclear  fusion” as an energy breakthrough, “Clean Energy or Weapons?”  M. V. Ramana argues that the fusion research will not produce the energy its boosters claim, while on the other hand it “will contribute far more to U.S. efforts to further develop its terrifyingly destructive nuclear weapons arsenal.”   The fusion research has been a “dangerous distraction.”  “The Intergovernmental  Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has warned that to stop irreversible damage from climate change, the world will have to achieve zero net emissions by 2050.  Given this short timeline to turn round our economies and ways of living, spending billions of dollars on fusion power only amounts to diverting money and resources away from proven and safer renewable energy sources.   Meanwhile, nuclear fusion experiments will further the risk posed by the nuclear arsenal. We need nuclear weapons abolition, but programs like [the fusion research] offer nuclear weapons modernisation,  which is just a means to assure destruction forever.”  Orig. pub. in Beyond Nuclear, (12-16-2022).  M. V. Ramana occupies the Chair in Disarmament at U. of British Columbia, Vancouver.

Another Necessary Big Idea for the Future: Just Transition   In These Times Magazine (March 2023) supports climate reparations in “The Big Idea: Climate Reparations.”  “The idea that wealthy nations should pay to mitigate the planetary emergency, which they caused and which disproportionately affects poorer countries.”  (A major advocacy of the Green New Deal. –D)

Greetings ya'll,

Earth Day is one of our FAVORITE days....because it is also our ANNIVERSARY!  This is a song I wrote years ago and did a recording of it at Red Barn but I really wanted it to be a 'music video' with images.  Our friend Asha is making the dream video and this is the RAW version with just me before Kelly added his magic in the studio and before Asha created the video of it!

Celebrating Earth Day on the cusp of deep change. We don't know what follows this lovely spring. But we can live this moment in celebration. At times when the world is uncertain, stories and myths have given lessons to use stepping out into the unknown. Look for Valemon the Bear a couple stories down to find a myth from the wildlands in yourself.

City of Fayetteville seeks input for new Climate Action Plan

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The City of Fayetteville is embarking on a new, comprehensive Climate Action Plan, and it will host several in-person events this spring to gather input and feedback from Fayetteville residents. . . .

Two Climate Action Plan engagement events will be held on the downtown square during the Fayetteville Farmer’s Market. The first [was] Saturday, April 15, and the second will be Saturday, April 22. . . .

To view and take the questionnaire, go to: https://speakup.fayetteville-ar.gov.

Since adopting the Energy Action Plan, the City has made significant energy improvements, including constructing a 10-Megawatt solar power array, expanding sidewalk and trail infrastructure and a implementing a food waste composting program for Fayetteville residents.

In November 2021, Fayetteville City Council passed Resolution 288-21, requesting the addition of an Ecosystem Services Plan to the City’s existing Energy Action Plan. Combined, these two plans will form a Climate Action Plan for the City.

USA AND THE WORLD

Dick — tomorrow is Earth Day, a time each year when we show our support for the planet and advocate for a better environmental future for everyone who inhabits it.

But not everyone shares those goals. Right now, there is an urgent effort by the far-right in Congress to push forward a huge giveaway to polluters and lock us into new fossil fuel production — while also proposing draconian cuts to agencies like EPA.

Our movement is the only thing stopping them — but the truth is that we need your help. . . . We’re pressuring the Biden administration to adopt historic new standards to protect communities against pollution from dirty cars and trucks, tackling the leading cause of climate change in the U.S. and saving thousands of lives annually. Monthly gifts will power our campaign to strengthen and pass these protections into law >>

· Republican lawmakers are moving to restrict voting rights — from statehouse elections to the 2024 presidential election. We’re campaigning to defeat their anti-democratic bills, and pass new voting rights legislation in Congress. . . .

Rabbi Waskow will have the honor of offering the opening blessing at the summit’s opening session, May 8 from 12-1:30.

Climate destruction is being bankrolled by large corporations and their executives who choose to act against what is right and good, at the expense of our planet’s future. The climate crisis is a crisis of greed.

From May 8-11, people of faith will gather to learn about how banks and asset managers continue to invest in the fossil fuel industries that are destroying communities in the U.S. and around the world – and then find out how to hold these financial institutions accountable. Together, we can commit to taking the bold steps necessary to effect real change.

For Earth Day 2022,The Climate Crisis & Militarism Project (CCMP) of Veterans For Peace (VFP) invites you to our webinar: Averting Climate Catastrophe: No New Arms Race! Click here to register!

Militarism fuels the climate crisis, as we see every day now in the war in Ukraine (and Yemen and elsewhere), yet the mainstream and alternative media remain mostly silent on the many connections between war/militarism and the climate catastrophe. The devastation to the climate and environment caused by wars and increasing military spending must be confronted, then stopped.

It is more important than ever to join us in this work.  Can you support our Climate Crisis and Militarism Project by donating today? Veterans For Peace members have been hard at work over the last few months doing hundreds of presentations to bring awareness of how militarism fuels the climate crisis.  Sign up to have CCMP do a presentation to your local organization, chapter or faith group!

You can also check out these great resources:

·       NEW! Download the updated VFP's Environmental Costs of War handout

·       Distribute our half-page flyer that links to the above PDF!

Don't forget to join us TONIGHT at 7pm(EDT), 6pm(CDT), 4pm(PDT) for our webinar!  There is still time to register!

Moderated by Marcy Winograd of CODEPINK, features panelists:

·         Dr. David Vine, Professor, Department of Anthropology, American University.  Dr. Vine is a widely sought-after speaker, authoritative source on militarism and Empire, and the author of The United States of War and Base Nation: How U.S. Military Bases Abroad Harm America and the World.

·         Col. Ann Wright, retired U. S. Army Colonel, and former high ranking U.S. State Department official, who resigned her position in protest of the U.S. illegal invasion of Iraq and has continued to be a powerful voice for peace and the environment.  She is the co-author of Dissent: Voices of Conscience

·         Erik Edstrom, A West Point graduate and infantry platoon leader in Afghanistan and Presidential Escort Platoon Leader during the Obama administration. He studied climate change at Oxford University earning a Master of Science degree. Author of UN-AMERICAN: A Soldier’s Reckoning of Our Longest War.
