Here is the beginning of what
I wrote in 2011:
The transformation of
Valentine’s Day to Standing on the Side of Love Day is a campaign by Dan
Furmansky of the Unitarian Universalist Association (dfurmansky@uua.org)
(standingonthesideoflove.org). The Day is a part of OMNI’s National and International
Days Project, which celebrates Days of
nonviolent peacemaking , social and economic justice, rights of all species,
and earth stewardship, and re-envisions, re-defines, and transforms in order to
transcend Days hostile to those values.
The present trivializing commodification of
Valentine’s Day troubles many members of faith and humanist communities. For a week or more leading up to Valentine’s
Day, the newspapers are full of ads commercializing love and relationship as a
ring, or box of candy, or a massage, or really anything someone will sell to someone who will buy as a shortcut. We can imagine a better
“Valentines Day.”
Dan Furmansky welcomed OMNI into the campaign
in 2011 in these words:
“We’d be thrilled to have you participate in our National Standing on the
Side of Love Day campaign in this way.
We consider this an open source campaign, and we hope you will both use
our materials as they work for you, as well as share what you are working on so
we can uplift it.
