Here is the beginning of what I wrote in 2011:

The transformation of Valentine’s Day to Standing on the Side of Love Day is a campaign by Dan Furmansky of the Unitarian Universalist Association ( (   The Day is a part of OMNI’s National and International Days Project, which celebrates Days of nonviolent peacemaking , social and economic justice, rights of all species, and earth stewardship, and re-envisions, re-defines, and transforms in order to transcend Days hostile to those values.   The present trivializing commodification of Valentine’s Day troubles many members of faith and humanist communities.  For a week or more leading up to Valentine’s Day, the newspapers are full of ads commercializing love and relationship as a ring, or box of candy, or a massage, or really anything someone will sell to someone who will buy as a shortcut.   We can imagine a better “Valentines Day.”

Dan Furmansky welcomed OMNI into the campaign in 2011 in these words:

“We’d be thrilled to have you participate in our National Standing on the Side of Love Day campaign in this way.  We consider this an open source campaign, and we hope you will both use our materials as they work for you, as well as share what you are working on so we can uplift it.

Here is more information about what we accomplished this year:

“Eve Ensler, ‘We Should Be Hysterical About Sexual Violence’”  by Decca Aitkenhead, Guardian UK , Reader Supported News, Feb. 8, 2014.
Aitkenhead writes: "According to UN figures, one in three women on the planet will be beaten or sexually assaulted. That works out at one billion women, so Ensler wants a billion to gather on 14 February outside buildings that represent justice - police stations, courthouses, government offices - and dance."

--Barry, Kathleen.  Unmaking War, Remaking Men: How Empathy Can Reshape Our Politics, Our Soldiers, and Ourselves.   Phoenix Rising P, 2010.   An appeal for the “re-humanization: of soldiers from destructive masculinities and fighting machines into compassionate human beings.   A call for a radical social, moral, political paradigm shift.
One of Cindy Sheehan’s guests on her radio program was Kathleen Barry, Feminist and Professor Emerita from Penn State University.  Her new book is UNMAKING WAR, REMAKING MEN: How empathy can reshape our politics, our soldiers and ourselves.  Dr. Barry focuses on the masculinity of war and the social expectations placed on boys.  Introducing new concepts such as core masculinity and expendable lives, this book exposes how masculinity and the military prepare men for killing and introduces new approaches to world peace and a new masculinity that is already in the making.  We can change socialization within our society to reduce the aggression and violence which war demands!

--Elster, Ellen and Majken Jul Sorensen, eds.  Pref. Cynthia Enloe.  Women Conscientious Objectors: An Anthology.  War Resisters International, 2010.   The book exposes the links between patriarchy and militarism as central to countering the sources of war; changing masculinities and femininities is integral to reducing militarism and war.

--Kimmel, Michael.  Misframing Men: The Politics of Contemporary Masculinities.  Rutgers UP, 2010.  On the social construction of  manhood .   Kimmel founded the National Organization for Men Against Sexism.
