WHERE ARE THE MODERATE
MUSLIMS? By Dick Bennett
A letter-writer to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette (Kipp
Woodbury, “Cannot Buy
Friendship,”3-29-13) asks: “…if Islam is
such a peaceful religion, where are the moderate Muslims standing up and
telling the world that the radicals are wrong and must stop their jihads?” Perhaps we cannot blame the writer for
thinking Islam is extreme, hateful, violent, since our mainstream media
emphasizes the violence. But that
conclusion is like reporting the US
abroad primarily through the behavior of extreme US US (in 2009 nearly one-fourth world’s population
was Muslim, e.g. 22 million in China U.S.
The word “jihad” does not mean holy
war. It means struggle, or
effort—particularly the inward effort of grappling with our own character and
life and the outward effort of opposing oppression and social injustice. The concept includes teaching, the pursuit
of a culture of peace, and other benign
meanings. But in the US a few groups and individuals have generalized
the actions of a very few fundamentalist Muslims to apply to Islam, just as
enemies of the US

the moderate Muslims opposing the Muslim fundamentalists? Take your hands off your ears and eyes and
you’ll find them all around you-- in Fayetteville ,

How can non-Muslims learn about moderate
Muslims? By reading OMNI’s newsletters
on Islam and Islamophobia. By reading a scholarly biography of Mohammed,
for example by Karen Armstrong. By
studying about Islam in histories, films, novels, poems, songs written and
composed by people who know that only a few Muslims are criminal bombers,
murderers, and torturers. By
encouraging schools and colleges to provide comparative religions classes. And especially by simply getting acquainted
with Muslims in your neighborhood and community, your classrooms and clubs.
