BEAT THE HEAT WITHOUT
FOSSIL FUELS by Dick Bennett
Six actions:
1. Plant trees both canopy and mid-level (e.g. oaks and redbuds) on western and
southern sides (shrubs too) of your building. (And let your grass grow.)
2, Shade or canopy all windows west and
south. (Bring shades inside each fall to last longer.)
3. Open all windows during nights to
catch the cool, close before temp. rises.
4. Open all indoor blinds or curtains
nights, close during day.
5. Set ceiling fans to rotate
counter-clockwise to push air down to your skin (it doesn’t cool the air).
6. If you have one: Turn on attic fan
when extra hot.
These steps have worked for me for 45 years, with these 3 caveats: I live
mainly in the basement floor of a hillside 3-story house; I live in the Ozark Mts.;
and the climate is warming! –Dick
