On the Shabbat before Passover, known as Shabbat
haGadol, the Great Shabbat, a special prophetic reading is included in the
morning service. The passage comes from the Prophet Malachi, the last of the
ancient Hebrew Prophets. Speaking 2500 years ago, Malachi's message has been
remembered through the millennia and seems especially relevant in our own time.
His words follow (translated by Rabbi Waskow). . . .
For the last decade or so, teens and youth have
been courageously stepping into leadership of the climate movement. With names
like Xiye, Irsa, and Greta, and movements like Fridays For Future, Youth
Climate Strike, Sunrise Movement, and Jewish Youth Climate Movement, Gen Z has
been showing the world that the next generation will fight for all of our
future with incredible dedication, vision, and prophetic voice. At the same
time, there are climate elders, on whose shoulders this generation stands.
Elders who have been growing, seeding, and inspiring for many decades. As
Malachi understood so clearly then, it will be the hearts of elders and youth
turning towards each other in our day - learning from and honoring one another
- that will make this movement maximally powerful and effective.
With that in mind, you are warmly invited to
attend our upcoming program on 3/28 at 7:30pm, with luminary elders of
the climate movement, Bill McKibben (Third Act, 350.org), Joanna Macy (The Work That Reconnects), and Rabbi Arthur Waskow (The Shalom
Center, Exodus Alliance) in conversation together.
Moderated by a younger climate leader and hosted
by Third Act, Exodus Alliance, and GreenFaith, this discussion will center the
deep wisdom and prophetic perspectives of these generational leaders, as they
share about past, present, and future of the climate movement and the world
they’ve dedicated their lives to building. You won’t want to miss it!With blessings and gratitude to be doing this work
together,— Rabbi
Nate

meetings worldwide was emphasized by PBS Newshour 2-23-22.

John Seager. “President’s Note.” “…vast swaths of our planet…are racing
toward levels of heat and humidity
where ‘it’s no longer possible to be able to sweat fast enough to prevent
overheating.”
Marian Starkey. “Editor’s Note.”
“Fertility decline and slowing
population growth present opportunities for the U.S. to reduce climate changing emissions, lift people out of poverty,
close the inequality gap, and protect…our planet’s natural resources for future
generations” (2).
