JEANNETTE RANKIN NEWSLETTER #1

OMNI
JEANNETTE PICKERING RANKIN NEWSLETTER #1 (June 11, 1880-May 18, 1973)
Compiled by Dick Bennett for a Culture of Peace, Justice, and Ecology
Rankin's two terms in Congress coincided with U.S. entry into both World Wars. A lifelong pacifist, she was one of 56 members of Congress who voted against entry into World War I in 1917, and the only member of Congress to vote against declaring war on Japan after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.[3][4] In addition, she was the only woman to cast a Congressional vote in favor of the Constitutional Amendment granting women unconditional voting rights.  Wikipedia

What’s at stake:
Instead of Warriors, let us celebrate those who tried and are trying to prevent killing.  Let us truly strive to stop the expansion of the National Cemeteries.  Link to Peace, Justice, Ecology Heroes:  http://www.omnicenter.org/leaders-for-peace-justice-and/  Let us celebrate firemen, teachers, Emergency Medical workers, police, all workers killed in the line of duty.  See “Service” Newsletter.

FALLBACK POSITION, GOOD BUT LUKEWARM COMPARED TO RANKIN’S PACIFISM
Memorial Day, it seems to me, should also honor the Thoreaus, the conscientious objectors, the anti-war protesters, who attempted to forestall or shorten the more unjust or immoral of these wars. It isn’t only the fallen soldiers who served the nation, but also those who worked to ensure that no soldiers fell in unjust wars, in wars that after the UN Charter was passed in 1945, would be designated as ‘illegal.’ "   Juan Cole,
