CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTION TO MILITARY SERVICE NEWSLETTER #6, MAY 15, 2015

OMNI

CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTION TO WAR NEWSLETTER #6, INTERNATIONAL CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS’ DAY #6, May 15, 2015.

Compiled by Dick Bennett for a Culture of Peace.  (#1 May 15, 2010. #2 May 15, 2011; #3 May 15, 2012; #4 May 15, 2013; #5 May 15, 2014).

Every year, 15th May is International Conscientious Objection day.  These six newsletters offer a small anthology of writings and films for our own and others education, for classrooms, for letters and columns to newspapers.
Around the world, all who understand the chaos, brutality, and futility of wars remember all who refused to go to war and raise awareness of the many who continue to be persecuted and imprisoned for refusing to kill and be part of armed forces.

OMNI NATIONAL/INTERNATIONAL DAYS PROJECT
Two kinds of violence disrupt the harmony of our world:  individual and structural.   This newsletter is part of OMNI’s NATIONAL/INTERNATIONAL DAYS PROJECT, by which we affirm nonviolent DAYS, such as United Nations DAY, Human Rights DAY, Conscientious Objectors’ DAY, and strive for the goals of equity, health, protection of all species—that is, a world free of war and war permitted or promoted by our warrior leaders.  Read Richard Rubenstein’s book,  Reasons to Kill: Why Americans Choose War (2010).   Rubenstein analyzes seven “key rationales for war” employed by successive leaders to gain public support for domination and destruction instead of cooperation and construction.

Our DAYS Project also counters the structural conditioning for violence and wars in such celebrations as Columbus Day, Armed Forces Day, and Memorial Day.    These national days of violence reinforce the long history of US war-making and its drive for domination, hardness, punishment, wars, invasions and interventions—hundreds since even before the some fifty since WWII, amounting to permanent war. (See Gary Brumback, America’s Oldest Professions: Warring and Spying;  William Blum, Killing Hope and Rogue Nation.)   --Dick

International Conscientious Objector Day
15 May 2015
15 May every year: Raising awareness of those who refuse to participate in armed conflict.
Conscientious Objectors are those who, for moral or religious reasons, refuse to participate in armed conflict or join the armed forces. International Conscientious Objector Day is marked around the world each year on 15 May. You can find further details on the Peace Pledge Union website. Also, take a look at CO Project, an online archive and educational resource about Conscientious Objectors.

As well as relating to issues of peace and conflict, and linking in with history in terms of how Conscientious Objectors were treated during the two World Wars, this is also an important human rights issue and can give rise to interesting discussions about
rights and responsibilities. Does your country have the right to force you to enlist, and do you have the right to refuse?

International Conscientious Objectors Day is marked around the world each year on 15 May.

representative people who 'maintained the right to refuse to kill' are read out and white flower was laid
on the Stone for each of the people remembered.

The International Conscientious Objectors’ Day was initiated by the International Conscientious Objectors' Meeting (ICOM). The ICOM was an annual meeting of COs and their supporters held throughout the world to exchange ideas and offer solidarity. In 1985, at a time when compulsory conscription was still commonplace, it decided to use 15 May, to develop a sharper focus for action on conscientious objection.
The Conscientious Objectors Stone here in Tavistock Square, London was unveiled on May 15 1994 by Sir Michael Tippett, Peace Pledge Union President and a one time conscientious objector
