Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.

To mark the theme of this year’s 30th anniversary of the International Day of Peace is the “Right of Peoples to Peace.” This anniversary offers a unique opportunity to reaffirm the United Nations commitment to the purposes and principles upon which the Organization was founded. The Declaration on the Right of Peoples to Peace recognizes that the promotion of peace is vital for the full enjoyment of all human rights.

The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by resolution 36/67PDF document of the United Nations General Assembly to coincide with its opening session, which was held annually on the third Tuesday of September. The first Peace Day was observed in September 1982.

In 2001, the General Assembly by unanimous vote adopted resolution 55/282PDF document, which established 21 September as an annual day of non-violence and cease-fire.

The United Nations invites all nations and people to honour a cessation of hostilities during the Day, and to otherwise commemorate the Day through education and public awareness on issues related to peace.

Next Time You Hear Someone Complain About UN Peacekeepers, Ask Them to Tell the President and Their Representatives to Fund Them Properly.  --Dick
January 27, 2014
Tell Washington You Stand with UN Peacekeepers

Congress and the Obama Administration agreed to slash funding for UN peacekeeping last week, which included providing no funds for the newest mission in Mali and cutting funds for the mission in South Sudan. Now we need your help to let them know that this is unacceptable.

If you care about supporting UN peacekeeper's critical, life-saving work worldwide, then make sure Washington knows by sending the message now.

Right now, peacekeepers in Mali and in South Sudan are risking their lives to restore peace and democracy, and we’re repaying them by denying the resources they need to do the jobs we asked for. You can learn more about how this cut to funding will affect vital UN peackeeping around the world in this Foreign Policy op-ed co-authored by Better World Campaign Executive Director Peter Yeo.

A note from UNA-USA Executive Director Chris Whatley

Stand Up For Those Who Stand the Line

Just as peacekeeping is proving its worth, Congress and the Administration have decided to cut U.S. support for UN peacekeeping by 12 percent. Moments like this define the role of UNA-USA as a grassroots organization.  It is time for Americans who believe in the fundamental peacemaking role of the UN to stand up for those who stand on the line in the most dangerous regions of the world.
