11/30-MARIA FULL OF GRACE: FILM
A 17-year old,
lives with three generations of her family in a cramped house in rural Colombia .
Desperate to leave her job stripping thorns from flowers, Maria accepts a
lucrative offer to transport swallowed packets of heroin to the United States .
The ruthless world of international drug trafficking proves to be more than
Maria bargained for as she becomes ultimately entangled with both drug cartels
and immigration officials. A conclusion so powerful and revealing it could only
be based on a thousand true stories. Maria's journey humanizes a problem that
is too easily relegated to a headline. Directed by Joshua Marston, 2004. Movie:
Spanish with English subtitles. Discussion: English.

12/1- A TRADE WITHOUT BORDERS— THE COCAINE TRADE AND U.S.
DRUG POLICY:
Despite
billions of dollars being spent since the 1980s to eliminate the cocaine trade,
it still thrives and significantly impacts U.S.
relations with Latin America . Suzanne Wilson,
Associate Professor of Sociology and Anthropology at Gustavus Adolphus College,
analyzes U.S. drug policies against the cocaine trade in Latin America, and
their effects on coca cultivation, cocaine processing, and drug trafficking.
Specifically, U.S. drug
policy in Colombia and Mexico will be
discussed.

12/7- BINTA AND THE GREAT IDEA: FILM
Binta's father
is a small-time fisherman in Senegal .
Impressed by Europeans who catch thousands of fish using big boats equipped with
sonar, he is shown sharing this ‘great idea’ with various officials. But, when
meeting with the provincial leader, we find out his true intentions. He wants
to make the world a better place by adopting a white child and teaching him/her
the qualities that Western industrialized society has largely lost, such as
sharing, solidarity and the sustainable use of resources. This film is unusual
in that it allows us a glimpse of Western culture as viewed from a third world
perspective. Various themes are touched upon: the power of art to bring about
change, sustainability and equitable division of resources, and the true
meaning of progress and humanity. Directed by Javier Fesser, 2004. Movie: Diola
and French with English subtitles. Discussion: English

12/14- LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE: FILM
Based on the
best-selling novel by Laura Esquival, this internationally popular romantic
fable from Mexico
centers on a young woman who discovers that her cooking has magical effects.
The tale's heroine, Tita, is the youngest of three daughters in a traditional
Mexican family. Bound by tradition to remain unmarried while caring for her
aging mother, Tita nevertheless falls in love with Pedro. Pedro returns her
affection, but is destined to marry Tita's elder sister. The lovestruck young
woman is brutally disappointed, and her sadness has such force that it infects her
cooking: all who eat it her feel her heartbreak with the same intensity.
Directed by Alfonso Arau, 1992. Movie: Spanish with English subtitles.
Discussion: English.
