Stop Ukraine War: Peace Protest #7 this Saturday

Dear friends,

We are holding our 7th monthly peace protest to Stop the Ukraine War this Saturday, September 30th, at 11 A.M. at Washington County Courthouse.  We hope to see you there!

 

We must keep standing up to say No More War, not only to stop the killing of Ukrainians & Russians, and to stop the threat of nuclear war, but also to stop the long war our leaders are planning for, as detailed below by antiwar journalist Caitlin Johnstone.  Permanent war not only promises to harm millions of people, but also costs trillions of dollars that could be invested in things that help life instead (biophilia).

Western officials and media pundits are now directly acknowledging that Ukraine’s much-touted “spring counteroffensive” has been a catastrophic failure, but rather than seeing this as a reason to reconsider the mainstream political consensus on this war, they are instead telling everyone that the counteroffensive’s failure means we must commit to the status quo of bloodshed and nuclear brinkmanship for years to come.

In a recent article titled “U.S. and G-7 Allies Expect War in Ukraine to Drag On for Years,” Bloomberg reports that the U.S.-centralized power structure expects to be backing its proxy conflict against Russia for a very long time, potentially into the 2030s.   MORE

PREVENTING NUCLEAR WAR: The Background
One of the best books on US nuclear weapons, empire, and war is Empire and the Bomb:  How the US Uses Nuclear Weapons to Dominate the World  (2007) by Joseph Gerson.  It’s particularly valuable at this moment of confrontation between the nuclear powers USA and Russia.  Russia invaded Ukraine and threatened use of nuclear weapons if US and NATO crossed more red lines.  Most members of the peace movement condemned President Putin as a war criminal.  But that reminded the world that the US has committed similar crimes.   Gerson provides a great deal of information about that.  For example, on p. 12 Gerson writes: “…every president since Truman has prepared or threatened nuclear war during crises, confrontations, and wars to preserve Washington’s global ‘sphere of influence.’”  What the peace movement recommends now is to prevent wars and when that fails, to stop them through diplomacy.  Nuclear wars are so unthinkable our efforts should be headlong for ABOLITION OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS.    --Dick
