Jackie Cabasso, Executive
Director of the Western States Legal Foundation, based in Oakland,
California, since 1984. In 1995 she was a “founding mother” of the
Abolition 2000 Global Network to Eliminate Nuclear Weapons, and she
continues to serve on its Coordinating Committee. Since 2007 she has
served as an Executive Advisor to Mayors for Peace. She is a National
Co-convener of UFPJ. Jackie was the 2008 recipient of the International
Peace Bureau’s Sean MacBride Peace Award.

John Burroughs, Senior
Analyst for the New York City-based Lawyers Committee on Nuclear Policy
(LCNP). He has represented LCNP in Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty
meetings and negotiations on the Treaty to Prohibit Nuclear Weapons.
His articles and op-eds have appeared in publications including Fordham
International Law Journal, Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, Arms
Control Today, Newsweek, and Newsday.

analyst and lawyer with the Oakland, California-based Western States

Congress, organize a public teach-in, or hand out leaflets on the
street about space issues.

This table demonstrates results of a recent study, which
found that public dollars invested in health care, education, mass
transit, or construction for home weatherization and infrastructure
create more jobs than investing an equivalent amount in the military
(or in tax breaks)
In fact, twice as many jobs are created by equivalent spending on
education and mass transit as on the military. The research was
conducted by the Political Economy Research Institute (PERI) at the University of Massachusetts
– Amherst.

The U.S. military
has now built missile "defense" sites in Alaska and
California (as well as Romania, and under construction in Poland). Next
will be New York, Michigan, or Ohio, unless we can stop
them.

I strongly oppose building a Ground-Based Mid-Course Missile
"Defense" system in New York, Ohio, Michigan, or anywhere
else on earth.
These missiles are a highly provocative part of the U.S. arms race,
taken as hostile by Russia and China. Arguments in Washington, D.C.,
for a militarized defense against a supposed Russian threat were
rejected by a senior Pentagon officer in Politico on May 12, 2016, in
these terms:
"The Army is looking for a purpose, and a bigger chunk of the
budget. And the best way to get that is to paint the Russians as being
able to land in our rear and on both of our flanks at the same time.
What a crock."
Bureaucracy and profiteering are not sufficient justification for
constructing these counterproductive systems, which will endanger,
rather than protect, us, damage the natural environment, and waste huge
sums of money needed for useful projects that answer legitimate human
needs.
