On
this date in 1948, the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights. So, this is Human Rights Day. The vision of
rights for everyone is far from realized, but RootsAction's growing list of
victories in the struggle should keep us building toward larger ones.
When we help free an innocent prisoner, demilitarize a police force, elect
better legislators, or prevent the nomination of an extremely hawkish
contender to head the Pentagon, we advance the cause of human rights -- all
of which we've successfully done in recent months.
On Nov. 30, the Washington Post reported on
a statement of
opposition to Michèle Flournoy being released that day by five national
progressive organizations -- RootsAction.org, Progressive Democrats of
America, CodePink, World Beyond War, and Our Revolution. The Post's coverage included a quote
from RootsAction national director Norman Solomon pledging an extensive
campaign of constituent pressure on senators to vote against Flournoy if
she were to be nominated for Defense Secretary: "RootsAction.org has a
1.2 million active list of supporters in the U.S., and we're geared up for
an all-out push for a 'no' vote, if it comes to that."
Flournoy went from a virtual shoo-in to missing out on the nomination in a
matter of weeks. As Solomon recounted in
a widely published article, "activism succeeded in changing
'Defense Secretary Flournoy' from a fait accompli to a lost fantasy of the
military-industrial complex."
The next victories will probably be significantly harder, but RootsAction
is laying the groundwork. We're gaining a bigger media presence. We're
forming stronger coalitions. And we're setting limits where we can be
expected to take an effective stand.
Here are two key things you can do to help RootsAction gain leverage and
accomplish more in the days ahead.
1. Forward this email to people who might want to join RootsAction.
2. Make a one-time or recurring
donation to help us boost our momentum and create a more
progressive direction for the era ahead.
P.S. You might want to take a moment to read the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights or to listen to Eleanor Roosevelt
reading it, and share the links with others.
Thank you!

Barbara Ehrenreich, Cornel West, Daniel Ellsberg, Naomi Klein, Bill

AFSC 12-10-20
Dear Dick,
Everyone deserves dignity
and justice. But in the United States, 2.3 million people are locked
away in prisons, jails, and immigration and juvenile detention
centers, where they are subject to civil and human rights violations.
With COVID-19, the dangers of imprisonment have multiplied
exponentially, making every sentence a potential death
sentence.
That’s why, between International Human Rights Day
(today, Dec. 10) and International Migrants Day (Dec. 18), people
across the country are taking part in a week of action to
#FreeThemAll—urging
public officials to take immediate steps to protect incarcerated
people from the virus, release as many as possible, and work toward a
future without incarceration.
Here are three ways you can join AFSC, partners, and communities in
the call to #FreeThemAll this week:
1. Tell public officials: Protect people from
COVID-19 in prisons, jails, and detention centers and release as many
people as possible! Contact your governor,
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and the Bureau of Prisons
(BOP) today!
2. Join an online national event to learn and act:
· Tonight, Dec. 10 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT: Carving Out Rights From Inside the Prison
Industrial Complex: Join us as we discuss human
rights for people in prisons, jails, and detention centers. The event
also celebrates the forthcoming book of the same name and will
include a panel presentation, poetry, and musical performances. Register here.
· Sunday, Dec. 13 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT: Room at the Table: An Interfaith Service in
Solidarity with Caged and Incarcerated Loved Ones: Attend
our interfaith service to hear testimonies from formerly and currently
incarcerated and detained people as well as prayers from faith
leaders calling to bring everyone home to the community table. Register here.
· Wednesday, Dec. 16 at 2 p.m. ET/11 a.m.
PT: Free Them All Phone Zap: Join
people across the country making phone calls to public officials
urging them to release people, adopt protective measures, and more.
We'll provide stories and updates on campaigns from around the U.S.
and all the training you need to take action; just come ready with a
phone and internet access. Register here.
· Friday, Dec. 18 at 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT: Love to Black Immigrants: Teach In +
Card-writing. Join AFSC, the African Bureau for
Immigration and Social Affairs, and other partners to send love and
care to detained Black immigrants and learn how to counter injustices
faced by Black immigrants and asylum seekers. Register today to receive cards to send.
3. Learn more and find additional events hosted
by AFSC in California, Colorado, and around the country.
We hope you join us for our week of action to #FreeThemAll. And don’t
forget to spread the word!

James, we’re excited to share
our bold plan to demand that the Biden-Harris administration does
everything in their power to achieve racial justice in America.
We have no time to lose. This is the critical
period when the next administration is setting their priorities,
Cabinet members, and senior staff. If we don’t get loud, our concerns
will be ignored. And what we have learned is that the only change we
ever get in this country is the change we fight for.
We will unpack this more
below. But first: Can you add your name
to our demands so the Biden-Harris administration knows that
thousands of people are ready to hold them accountable?
ADD YOUR NAME
The Grassroots Law Project
team hustled to get this sophisticated set of policy demands together
because of the critical moment we are in.
If we do not mobilize in
historic numbers now, our communities and concerns will be ignored.
We can’t make the mistake of assuming that politicians, once elected,
will keep their campaign promises. Real lives depend on enough of us
demanding the bold leadership required to root out systemic racism.
No more half measures.
BIDEN JUSTICE DEMANDS
We are calling on
the Biden-Harris administration to use the powers of the
Oval Office to reduce mass incarceration, measurably curb
violent policing, end the war on drugs, and seek justice and
accountability for families who’ve been directly harmed by
injustice in this country. Our entire plan has nearly 55 policies
that they can enact without Congress. These demands include, but
are not limited to:
·
Drastically overhaul and
improve the DOJ’s investigations into law enforcement and
prosecutor misconduct, including making an
immediate public commitment to reopen every police brutality case
that was not properly completed by the time the Obama
administration left office.
·
Implement executive orders
and department policy change including end
the 1033 agreements that allows the federal government to
militarize local police departments, end the policy of separating
children from families at the border, and fully repeal the Muslim
Ban.
·
Dramatically expand the use
of the pardon and commutation power by
pardoning and releasing all people in federal prison incarcerated
on drug charges, commute existing death sentences, and staff the
office of pardons and commutations with public defenders.
·
Make deep shifts in the
hiring practices, culture, and philosophy away
from career prosecutors by appointing qualified current or former
civil rights attorneys or public defenders to major cabinet, DOJ
and judicial posts including Attorney General, US Attorneys, and
Federal Judges.
|
ADD YOUR NAME
It will take all of us (and
it won’t be easy), but together, we can ensure that this
administration enacts the best policies for racial justice from a
U.S. presidency that this country has ever seen.
Sign on to demand justice
from President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris right now.
Let’s go!

HELP
SAVE LIVES IN YEMEN
Dick, today is Human Rights Day 2017, and we need you to stand up for the
rights of Yemen’s most vulnerable people.
According to the UN, Yemen is the
worst humanitarian crisis in the world. Children aren’t getting the
education they need; pregnant women aren’t getting the health care they
need; and millions of people aren’t getting the food they need.
We can’t stand by while their human
rights are denied. Instead, let’s stand up.
Help the UN save lives by
supporting humanitarian relief efforts.
By donating to the UN’s response fund
for Yemen, you can help provide humanitarian groups with resources, so they
can deliver food, shelter, water, and medicine to the people who need it
most.

The
UN’s humanitarian chief has warned of dire conditions in the country. He’s
also said, “it's not too late to save Yemen.” But we must act now.
Dick, on Human Rights Day, we can
make a difference by helping meet the basic needs of families in Yemen. If
you can, please make an emergency contribution today:

Dear Dick,
Today is Human Rights Day - a day that
reminds us that all people have fundamental rights, regardless of who
they are or where they come from.
It is also the first day of our Love Knows No Borders: A moral
call for migrant justice national week of action. We have
been moved to see dozens of faith, nonprofit, and community groups
across the country respond to our call to host marches, vigils,
services, and other events calling for demilitarization of the border
and a compassionate response to migrants seeking refuge.
We invite you to join us by visiting our website as we livestream our
nonviolent direct action at the border today, Dec. 10, at 10
a.m. PT / 12 noon CT / 1 p.m. ET.
This week is an opportunity for every one of us to take a powerful
stand and call on the U.S. to respect the human right to migrate, end
the militarization of border communities, and end the detention and
deportation of immigrants.
Here are some ways you can take part in our week of
action:
1. Find a solidarity
event in your community.
Actions are happening across the country throughout this week. Download and print
“Love Knows No Borders” posters (in Spanish and
English) to bring and share with others. (Questions about event hosting
or attending? Email migrantaction@afsc.org)
2. Support AFSC's work to
protect human rights and help those fleeing violence.
Donate to AFSC’s emergency response to support the migrant caravans –
providing them with food, water, and other necessities; monitoring
human rights; and continuing to advocate for more just and humane
immigration policies.
3. Spread the word on
social media.
Download and share our social media graphics on Facebook, Twitter, and
Instagram to engage your networks. Take photos of your event and share
them using #loveknowsnoborders and #migrantjustice.
We look forward to having you join us this week as we take a moral
stand together and call for welcoming all migrants with humanity and
love.
In solidarity,
