Eleven Vegan Meat Brands That Are Changing Everything

It’s a great time to eat vegan. There are more plant-based meat options than ever before, and they’re available everywhere, from your local co-op to big-box stores, including Target and Walmart. With so  many options to choose from, it can be hard to figure out which ones to try first—so we’ve taken away the guesswork with this handy list.

1. Beyond Meat

This innovative company is single-handedly changing the vegan meat game. What’s its secret? Beyond Meat’s mouthwatering products are made with non-GMO, gluten-free pea protein. After the sensation of the “bloody” Beyond Burger, the company unleashed Beyond Beef, a vegan ground beef perfect for tacos, meatballs, and whatever else you can dream up.  [LOCAL: A friend here found this brand at ONF, Whole Foods, and Natural Groceries.]

2. MorningStar Farms

Following PETA’s talks with Kellogg’s about offering more vegan products through its MorningStar Farms and Gardenburger brands, the company announced three reformulations of products from vegetarian to vegan. The tasty, improved items, which are now dairy– and egg-free, include MorningStar Farms’ Buffalo Chik PattiesBuffalo Wings, and Chik’n Nuggets, and BBQ Chik’n Nuggets. Look for the yellow “vegan” label on products in stores now and for even more vegan products by MorningStar in the future.  [LOCAL: Harp’s on N. College, where I often shop, offers 2 delicious brands: Morning Star for “meat” patties and crumbles and Quorn for “chicken” nuggets. ]

ANIMALS
PETA Global (Spring 2019)
Back cover, picture of a cow looking at readers with this question:  “Would It Kill You to Have a Veggie Sub?”

p. 23, PETA ad in the Bangor (Maine) International Airport to remind people that crustaceans are sentient “people” too:  “I’m ME, Not MEAT.  See the Individual. Go Vegan.”
Article: “Lobster Roll [of] Horror.  Exposed—Live Lobsters Torn Limb from Limb.”  “PETA’s eyewitness video shows workers dismembering fully conscious lobsters at Maine Fair Trade Lobster…by tearing off their claws, puncturing their shells, and decapitating them.”
This article is followed by a “Take Action Now,” giving the address for the District Attorney to urge him to prosecute cruelty to lobsters.  See video at PETA.org/MaineFreeTrade and to contact grocery store chains.
Most of the articles include a call to Action like this, and those not having the added section include instructions for action in the text of the article.

Zachary Toliver, PETA Blogger.  “Why the ‘White Stuff’ Isn’t the Right Stuff.”  Describes “a cow’s violence-filled life, ” white nationalist celebration of dairy milk, and PETA’s investigations of the “dairy industry’s cruelty”  and criticism of the US toxic white supremacist subculture that glories inracism, violence, sexism, and the dairy industry.  Take Action Now: go to PETA.org/HeiferSolutions.

In his book, Being the Change, Peter Kalmus denounces the human-caused sixth mass species extinction and bio-diversity loss now happening, which will last “the next ten million years,” and urges humans to take land out of production to give back to the non-man part of the biosphere, “leading to less meat consumption” and “perhaps to a tiered pricing structure for food” for the rich and the poor (274, based upon Edward Wilson’s book, Half-Earth).

Derek Jensen, Myth of Human Supremacy:
In this impassioned polemic, radical environmental philosopher Derrick Jensen debunks the near-universal belief in a hierarchy of nature and the superiority of humans. Vast and underappreciated complexities of nonhuman life are explored in detail—from the cultures of pigs and prairie dogs, to the creative use of tools by elephants and fish, to the acumen of caterpillars and fungi. The paralysis of the scientific establishment on moral and ethical issues is confronted and a radical new framework for assessing the intelligence and sentience of nonhuman life is put forth.
