"Today, 136 countries recognize the State of Palestine and its flag flies at the United Nations next to those of all Member States. However, these advances are not felt by children in Gaza, or by the residents of Nablus, Hebron and East Jerusalem .[..] let us reaffirm our commitment to bring about the just peace that the peoples of Israel and Palestine deserve."
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon
Message on the International Day of
Solidarity with the Palestinian People

In 1977, the General Assembly called for the annual observance of 29 November as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People (resolution 32/40 B). On that day, in 1947, the Assembly adopted the resolution on the partition of Palestine (resolution 181 (II))
In resolution 60/37 of 1 December 2005, the Assembly requested the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People and the Division for Palestinian Rights, as part of the observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People on 29 November, to continue to organize an annual exhibit on Palestinian rights or a cultural event in cooperation with the Permanent Observer Mission of Palestine to the UN.
The observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People also encouraged Member States to continue to give the widest support and publicity to the observance of the Day of Solidarity.
In 2015, the Palestinian flag was raised at the Headquarters and Offices of the United Nations. The UN General Assembly adopted the resolution on raising the flags of non-member observer States at the United Nations (A/RES/69/320). The United Nations decided that the flags of non-member observer States, including the flag of the State of Palestine, shall be raised at Headquarters and United Nations offices following the flags of the Members States of the Organization. The Ceremony of the Raising of the Flag of the State of Palestine at the UN headquarter in New York took place on September 30th 2015.

Sunday, 29th November 2015, is the first day of Advent as well as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People initiated by the United Nations. Tragically in Palestine, this time of Advent is beginning at a very dark time. In Bethlehem, clashes erupt almost daily, Israeli forces have closed down Hebron completely and Palestinian Jerusalemites are facing another round of harsh discrimination and house demolitions. In fact, instead of preparing for Christmas, Palestinians are struggling with the consequences of the past weeks.
We call upon the world and Kairos groups overseas to join the Palestinian struggle for justice and peace in solidarity with their prayers and vigils on Sunday, 29th November 2015 and light a candle in memory of the many people who have been killed, either by shootings, attacks or through the deadly effects of tear gas.
Together, we can send a strong message to the International Community to change their attitude and finally stop following their double standards in the Palestinian struggle towards justice and peace.
Since mid-September, we have faced outstanding, massive violence by the Israeli Occupation Forces and Israeli settlers which has led to the killing of at least 94 Palestinians in the West Bank, Jerusalem and Gaza - over 2000 people have been shot with life ammunition or rubber-coated metal bullets, according to the Ministry of Health.
We are mourning all innocent victims of the recent weeks. Resistance is a right and a duty for Christians and all Palestinians. We clearly support this right to resist the prolonged occupation and aggressions by successive Israeli governments and hereby call for a resistance in the logic of love.
"We do not resist with death but rather through respect of life. We respect and have a high esteem for all those who have given their life for our nation. And we affirm that every citizen must be ready to defend his or her life, freedom and land." (KP Chapter 4.2.5)
The Kairos Palestine Document clearly says that you cannot fight evil with evil and repeats the call to finally respect International Law. As the UN General Secretary, Ban Ki-moon said during last year's Solidarity Day: "The mindless cycle of destruction must end. The virtuous circle of peace must begin."
They say "Peace, Peace, when there is no peace" (Jeremiah 6:14):
There will be no just peace without an end to the Israeli Occupation.
There will be no just peace without a stop of ongoing house demolitions.
There will be no just peace without an end of the blockade of Gaza.
There will be no just peace without releasing innocent prisoners.
There will be no just peace without ending and condeming the killing.
There will be no just peace without a life of dignity for ALL people.

Kairos Palestine is based on the most essential values of Christian belief: Hope, Faith and Love. It says in the document: "In the absence of all hope, we cry out our cry of hope. We believe in God, good and just. We believe that God's goodness will finally triumph over the evil of hate and of death that still persist in our land." (Chapter 10)
Peace was never achieved through more violence. Our prayers are with the victims and their families and with all who actively promote non-violent resistance for an end to the occupation. We continue the struggle for justice and peace for all people!

Bethlehem, 24th November 2015

This is the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian people as
declared by the United Nations general assembly ! But locally people see so
little solidarity and Israel continues to violate basic human rights with
impunity. For the past week, we mourned ten more young Palestinians killed,
and we saw home demolitions, we saw the continued horrific siege of Gaza,
we saw health and religious rights violated daily, and we saw roads blocked
to traffic (getting from one Palestinian area to another is becoming
impossible). I just returned from Hebron to Bethlehem, a distance that
should take no more than half an hour. It took more than five hours because
of closures etc. It is a police apartheid state that makes sure we do not
have a normal functioning life.  we watched as Turkey shot down a Russian
airplane over Syrian territory (and lied about the issue since there is no
way, they could have provided warning in the few seconds that the airplane
moved across that tiny jetting Turkish territory), we watched as Russia
provided evidence of convoys of stolen Syrian oil traveling to Turkey and
funding Daesh/ISIS, we shared on facebook videos of horrors committed by
deluded human beings against other human beings, continued to see French
government go down the same deluded path that the US government did after
11 September 2001, and continued to suffer from tear gas and other weapons
used against us by Israeli occupation forces

Amid the horrors, at Bethlehem University, we welcomed Professor Zuhair Amr
who is helping us in research areas on biodiversity, we worked at the
museum and botanical garden, we continued our teaching (though students may
miss some classes), we received more donation of time and resources from
kind people, I gave a talk at an environmental conference about importance
of research in environmental and health fields, we met great new people
including award winning book writers and artists, and we continued to have
“joyful participation in the sorrows of this world”. To light a candle in
this darkness keeps us sane.

For those in Palestine: You are invited to a workshop at the Palestine
Museum of Natural History (http://www.palestinenature.org/visit/ ) 3-6 PM
Wednesday. Prof. Zuhair Amr and Prof. Mazin Qumsiyeh leading discussions
and practical training on areas of biodiversity and environmental
conservation. Reservations required 02-2773553 or email
info@palestinenature.org
For those who cannot attend, please donate to keep these activities going:

For all, please continue and expand your work in boycotts, divestment, and
sanctions (BDS), a movement that is accelerating the arrival of peace with
justice. Here is a good report by the American Anthropological Association
that is very well done which can be adapted to push for BDS in others
groups.
