The decade since 9/11 has seen the largest expansion of the US national-security budget since the Cold War. Over $7 trillion has been spent on the Department of Defense, the intelligence community, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The creation of the Department of Homeland Security and the establishment of a new Director of National Intelligence was the largest reorganization of the federal government since World War II.
When you couple all that spending with massive tax cuts it’s no wonder there’s a budget deficit. The reckless military spending has contributed to the economic crisis and fueled the summer’s gridlock over the debt-ceiling. A new committee, which has been dubbed the "Super Committee", was established to propose a solution.
Join AFSC and others in a grassroots effort to change our priorities from a militaristic approach to security to one of compassion.  We urge starting with compassion at home through meeting basic human needs and broaden into a foreign policy that recognizes basic human rights for people around the world.
In our new toolkit you will find a set of tools to help your community work on federal budget issues over the next year: fact sheets; guides to bird dogging, meeting with Congress and working with the media; ideas for actions and specific opportunities like the super committee and resolutions campaigns.
The twelve members of the Super Committee are charged with finding $1.2 trillion to cut from the federal deficit over ten years. Their recommendations, to be completed by November 23, could affect every single federal program: Social Security, Medicare, services that feed and house the poor, foreign aid, the military, tax policies, and more.
No matter where you reside, you can help Move the Money. If your Representative or Senator belongs to the Super Committee, we have a special module with specific actions you can take.
We hope these tools will help you as you wage peace,
Peter Lems and Mary Zerkel
