MARINE TRAINING CONTEMPT FOR LIFE AND TO KILL
“To Kill or Not to Kill” by Tyler Boudreau, The Progressive (Feb. 2009), 30-32. “To master one’s reluctance to take life, one must stop revering life so much, particularly that of an enemy. This unseemly dimension of war…was almost universally taken for granted within the Marine Corps.” Boudreau is the author of Packing inferno: The Unmaking of a Marine.
STOP THE KILLING (see nonviolence, pacifism, anti-war, United Nations)
EQUAL PROTECTION: STOP ALL KILLING, NEW BOOK
Love God, love your neighbor—probably all religions include this injunction. But affirming love cannot be complete, socially and politically speaking, without its prohibiting complement: do not kill, ahimsa.
But abhorrence of killing has never become effective in stopping wars, mass slaughters, genocides partly because those who abhor killing do not apply the principle to all aspects of life. They choose one or another killing to oppose, and allow others. They are essentially hypocritical. Many crY out against abortion while accepting capital punishment, wars, and starvation. Many denounce wars while expressing indifference to the unborn or mentally disabled. Perhaps all thought from a hierarchical ethic that necessitated such selectivity. What was needed was an inclusive ethic of reverence for life.
A book has been written to advance the idea: Consistently Opposing Killing by Rachel MacNair and Stephen Zunes (Praeger/Greenwood, 2008). This work explains a view dubbed the Consistent Life Ethic, which holds that because all life deserves reverence—born and unborn, disabled, the poverty-stricken, war combatants, animals-- all social support for actions that destroy life should be withdrawn. Supporters of this view include figures from the Dalai Lama and Nobel Peace Prize winner Malread Corrigon Maguire to actor Martin Sheen and Village Voice columnist Nat Hentoff. The call is for opposition to all forms of war, genocide, abortion, capital punishment, euthanasia and other forms of killing to be consistent. It is at once an ethical, religious and political ideology that for the first time, by showing how types of seemingly disparate killing are all linked, makes “pro-life” coherent.
Let us begin a discussion of this book and the ideas of the Consistent Life Ethic, especially by examining it critically to ensure the validity of its arguments. Then let us examine whether perhaps commitment to not killing—a-himsa--will result in an enlarged commitment to love.

The Dalai Lama won his Nobel Prize under false pretenses. He has CIA connections that document his supplying of arms to the Tibetan fighters (for killing, of course). He also used Tibetan orphans for his secret wars. See www.westernshugdensociety.org for the CIA documents and proof of the wars.
